Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 6, Dodgers 4 – August 26, 2016

If the Cubs and Dodgers face each other in the playoffs, the games probably won’t be started by Bud Norris and Mike Montgomery. But, if the teams do face each other in the playoffs, then that’s about as exciting as you would hope a game could be.

Once again, the Cubs need a crazy tying run to score in the ninth inning – Jason Heyward doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch – to give them a late chance to win. Having already homered earlier in the game to get the Cubs within one, Kris Bryant hit a two-run, opposite field shot in the 10th to give the Cubs the win.

Each of Norris and Montgomery pitched well enough to get through five innings, and the Cubs’ bullpen bested the Dodgers’ from there. Montgomery had good stuff going, but he couldn’t get any low strikes called, didn’t have his best command, and had to plow through a lot of trouble. That he gave up only three runs in his five innings was, in a backwards kind of way, really impressive.

Justin Grimm finally gave up a run, but it was a solo homer that came as part of two otherwise solid innings. The rest of the Cubs’ pen was flawless.

Addison Russell had yet another two-out RBI hit. Anthony Rizzo added a run-scoring single of his own.
