The Cubs lost by a hair to the Astros yesterday, which, combined with wins by the Cardinals over the Brewers and the Nationals over the Phillies, means that the Magic Numbers of 7 and 15 didn’t move. The former is to clinch the NL Central, and the latter is to clinch the best record in the National League.
All of the Cubs, Cardinals, and Nationals finish up their series today, and then the Cubs head to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals and put a serious dent in the Magic Number. The Nationals will host the Mets.
Those Mets lost to the Braves, by the way, which means they flip-flopped places with the Cardinals for that second Wild Card spot. It now goes Giants, Cardinals, Mets, each separated by just a half-game from each other.
