Myrtle Beach picked up a potentially potent new bat in time for yesterday’s game, and then went on to win that game to tie up the best of five Carolina League Championship Series at one game apiece. They will now hit the road for the final three games of the series, or as many as are needed anyway.
Eugene was on the road to open the best of three Northwest League Championship Series, and thanks to some excellent pitching they picked up the win. Now the Emeralds need just one victory to win the league title, and they have two home games to do it in.
In other words, Eugene has a chance to clinch the title tonight.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Eugene 3, Everett 1
The Emeralds carried a shutout into the eighth.
Best of Three Championship Series: Eugene leads 1-0.
Next Game: Tonight in Eugene at 7:05 PM PT
Matchup: Tyson Miller (Eugene) against Ljay Newsome (Everett)
The Cubs’ fourth round pick in 2016 has a chance to pitch the Emeralds to their first Northwest League title. This will be the first start of the postseason for the 6’5″ Miller, and just fifth for Eugene (he also appeared in two games from the bullpen). He has not been overpowering for the Emeralds (5.56 K/9), but he has allowed just four walks in 22.2 innings. On August 22 he pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in a start against Everett, striking out a season high three in the process.
Ljay Newsome was a 26th round pick in 2015 who has had some problems keeping the ball in the yard this season. His HR/9 of 1.63 is somewhat offset by his solid strikeout (8.60 K/9) and walk (2.23 BB/9) rates, but could still present an opportunity for the Emeralds. He allowed no homers when he faced the Emeralds on Aug 22, holding them scoreless over 4 innings.
