It’s not too complicated when you’re playing the team that’s chasing you. With last night’s win over the Cardinals, the Cubs’ Magic Number to clinch the NL Central dropped by two, and stands at just three.
With two more games left in this series, the Cubs will either close it out with a sweep, or won’t quite get there in St. Louis. It’s not really a concern either way. Just stating the facts.
Meanwhile, the Nationals have been on a hot streak, winning four in a row. Still, the Cubs have a 6.5-game lead over the Nationals for the best record in the NL. The Cubs’ Magic Number on that front is 13 (but, since the Cubs hold the tie-breaker, it’s really more like 12).
The Nationals are currently playing the Mets, who are still in the second Wild Card spot thanks to the Cardinals’ loss. In fact, every Wild Card-ish team lost yesterday, including the Giants and Marlins. The Giants are still up 1.5 games on the Mets, who are up 0.5 games on the Cardinals, who are up 4.5 games on the Marlins.
