Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Cardinals (12:45 CT) – Lineup, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

busch stadium

So the Cubs couldn’t quite figure out a way to clinch in front of the St. Louis faithful today, but they can still get their magic number down to one while hurting the Cardinals’ Wild Card chances with a win.

Jon Lester will lead the charge for the Cubs, pitching to David Ross as usual.

Lester was very good his last time out, allowing no earned runs on seven hits, no walks and seven strikeouts (in seven innings!) against the Houston Astros. The start before that, he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Giants, before completing the game himself and allowing just one earned run.

In fact, Lester has been on quite a tear for a while now – he has a 1.65 ERA in his ten starts since the All-Star Break (and that’s not too far behind Kyle Hendricks’ 1.33 ERA).

Opposing Lester and the Cubs is Cardinal righty Carlos Martinez. Although Martinez has been slightly less valuable (by WAR) than Adam Wainwright, he’s probably been the Cardinals’ best pitcher on the season. That said, he isn’t quite putting up the peripheral numbers were used to seeing from him (his strikeout rate is down four percentage points, for example). He has been very good in his past five starts however (1.85 ERA, 2.87 FIP), so don’t expect the bats to be flying today – at least not right away.

First pitch is at 12:45 CT – can the Cubs get the Magic Number down to 1?

Nico Hoerner’s Extremely High Hit and Two Even Higher Ones in Recent Memory

By now you've seen Nico Hoerner's jarringly-high game-winning hit from last night's game against the Diamondbacks, and I've kinda been chuckling about it all morning. I thought Sarah Langs offered some fun context for just how high that pitch was:...

NO WAY! Michael Busch Ties Cubs HR History with Yet ANOTHER Home Run

Coming into tonight's game, Michael Busch had homered in four straight contests. The streak was notable enough for all the obvious reasons, but it was especially interesting because all four long balls came with two strikes and all four came...

STUD: Nico Hoerner Won That Game for the Cubs With Sheer Will

Luck Turning? 10% and 100-Win Pace, Neris Bounces Back, Madrigal for Morel, and Other Cubs Bullets

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Win an Extra-Innings Thriller in Arizona

Although you'd always love to see more offense throughout a game, it's hard to argue with a thrilling, come-from-behind, late-innings, then-extra-innings win. That's what the Chicago Cubs pulled off last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a great performance from...

Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2 – April 15, 2024

Un-be-lievable. That game went from snooze-fest to nail-biter in a HURRY. And I don't think I'm too far off base saying the Cubs got pretty lucky in that one. Not only were they able to tie the game in the...
