Chicago Cubs

wrigley stands

That’s all it’ll take for the Chicago Cubs to clinch the NL Central for the first time since 2008.

Lefty Mike Montgomery gets a chance to carry the Cubs there, as he makes his fifth start for his new team tonight at Wrigley Field.

Montgomery was good his last time out, which coincidentally came against these very Brewers. Despite lasting just 5.0 innings, Montgomery allowed just one earned run on two hits and two walks, against six strikeouts.

If you’re sixth starter can consistently deliver that sort of performance, your team is in excellent shape. With the righty Jimmy Nelson on the mound, Montgomery will pitch to Miguel Montero.

Opposing Montgomery, Montero, and the Cubs is Jimmy Nelson. Nelson is having a tough year in Milwaukee, collecting just a 4.42 ERA (and an FIP on the wrong side of 5.00) through 29 starts. Moreover, the last time he faced the Cubs (August 17), he allowed six earned runs on six hits (including two homers), two walks, and just four strikeouts. Let’s see if they can rough him up one more time and lock things up in the Central.

First pitch is at 7:05 CT. Let’s watch some history, eh?
