For much of tonight’s game, the Cubs’ offense continued to look like it was slow to come out of its post-clinching funk. And, while I can’t say for sure that the less-than-mighty Reds pitching staff sufficiently roused them, I can say that the Cubs started clobbering balls in the 7th inning, took the lead, and won the game. They got homers from Addison Russell, Willson Contreras, and Jason Heyward(!). More on that below.
Jason Hammel was actually very solid once again, but did give up a home run once again. As we’ve discussed, that’s the primary bugaboo in his season, and it leaves open the question of whether there will be a spot for him on the postseason roster. Even still, it’s nice to see him put together back-to-back good-looking starts, if you could, well, strip away the homers.[adinserter block=”1″][adinserter block=”10″]
After Hammel’s solid seven innings, the Cubs were able to finish things out with Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman in the 8th and 9th innings for what feels like the first time in a long time.
Thank goodness for the Reds homer-prone pitching coming to town. The Cubs helped them set a record …
