Scoreboard Watching: Cubs Win, Nationals Lose

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have one last thing to clinch in their runaway season – ok, well, in their runaway regular season – and it’s the best record in the National League, which will secure them home field advantage through the NLCS, plus the right to play the Wild Card winner in the NLDS. It’s a desirable thing.

In that quest, the only team in the NL with a chance to catch them are the Washington Nationals, who now stand 7.0 games behind the Cubs with just 12 games left to play. That’s because the Nationals lost yesterday to the Miami Marlins, and, as you know, the Cubs beat the Reds.

The combination of those games puts the Cubs’ magic number to clinch the best record at just 5.

Meanwhile, in the NL Wild Card race, the Mets and Giants both lost, while the Cardinals won, bringing the Cardinals to within a game of the top-spot Mets, and into a tie with the Giants for the second spot. That race remains exceedingly tight.
