Ben Zobrist stayed hot, smacking another dinger, and the Cubs were able to keep things reasonably close despite an early deficit, but they couldn’t come all the way back in this one.
Jon Lester was not at his best today, though it’s worth pointing out that a lot of the damage came on balls that were so very close to being harmless (Eugenio Suarez’s homer just barely left the park in the far right field corner, Joey Votto’s RBI double was just a dribbling groundball that hugged the line). Hector Rondon had yet another disconcerting outing, and, while it remains reasonable to point out that he’s pitched injured or in non-competitive games since early August, it’s also reasonable to point out that his results since then have been uniformly terrible. I’m not really sure what to make of it heading into the playoffs, but if the Cubs are up by a couple runs in the 8th inning of a game next week, I’ll be tugging at my collar quite a bit more than usual.
