Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Reds (2:10 CT) – Lineup, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

great american ballparkThis is it. Until the playoffs, that is.

The Chicago Cubs look to finish the regular season in positive fashion in Cincinnati and will do so with Kyle Hendricks on the mound.

Hendricks enters Sunday with a MLB-best 1.99 ERA and has his eyes set on becoming the Cubs’ first ERA title winner since Ray Prim owned a National League-leading 2.40 ERA in 1945.

For what it’s worth, Prim tossed 165.1 innings in 34 games (19 starts) while owning the league’s best WHIP (0.998), H/9 rate (7.7) K/BB rate (3.83) and BB/9 rate (1.3). His 153 ERA+ was also at the top of the leaderboard.

If Hendricks can keep his pitching line clean, he’ll enter the record books in style.

The lineup behind him features the regulars to go along with the added bonus of Jorge Soler’s return. Willson Contreras catches Hendricks for the 12th time this season. Only Miguel Montero has been behind the plate for more of Hendricks’ games. Batters own a .193/.252/.311/.563 slash line in 258 PA against Hendricks when Contreras is catching.

Hendricks’ 1.09 ERA in 66.1 innings pitching to Contreras qualifies as solid, too.

The Cubs Offense Has Completely Vanished (And at the Worst Possible Time)

Interesting Night from Fill-In, Multi-Inning Closer Keegan Thompson

We are still less than a year removed from a time when Keegan Thompson was expected to be a critical part of the Chicago Cubs' bullpen. He had been so good transitioning into a multi-inning role in 2021 and 2022...

Nico Hoerner’s Extremely High Hit and Two Even Higher Ones in Recent Memory

By now you've seen Nico Hoerner's jarringly-high game-winning hit from last night's game against the Diamondbacks, and I've kinda been chuckling about it all morning. I thought Sarah Langs offered some fun context for just how high that pitch was:...

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Win an Extra-Innings Thriller in Arizona

Although you'd always love to see more offense throughout a game, it's hard to argue with a thrilling, come-from-behind, late-innings, then-extra-innings win. That's what the Chicago Cubs pulled off last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a great performance from...

Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2 – April 15, 2024

Un-be-lievable. That game went from snooze-fest to nail-biter in a HURRY. And I don't think I'm too far off base saying the Cubs got pretty lucky in that one. Not only were they able to tie the game in the...
