When a baseball game is so obviously going to be a certain thing – is built up for days to be that thing – we have reflexively come to expect that it will probably play out nothing at all like that thing. Because baseball.
But that wasn’t the case tonight, in the Wild Card match-up of aces Noah Syndergaard and Madison Bumgarner. We were waiting for it. They were supposed to be really good. And they were really good. [adinserter block=”1″]
Syndergaard was ridiculous for seven innings, turned it over to a bullpen that has been very good. Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia. What could go wrong?
Well, Reed didn’t get some calls, but squeaked by in the 8th. But Familia was not so fortunate, and the Giants won on an improbable three-run homer by Conor Gillaspie.
