It’s not like we didn’t know Travis Wood could do it.
The Cubs’ lefty reliever has always been an incredible athlete, showing off his big bat many times before. Heck, this year he also showed off what he could do in the outfield.
So, when Travis Wood was called upon to bridge the gap between starter Kyle Hendricks’ early exit (thanks to a comebacker off the arm) and the later arms of the bullpen, it wasn’t necessarily an enormous surprise that he sat back and ripped a shot to deep left when he came to the plate. That was a shot. Wood would go on to complete 1.1 scoreless innings, and he also got the win.
Folks probably remember Kerry Wood’s homer from the 2003 NLCS, which was the last pitcher homer in the playoffs for the Cubs, but this was the first time a Cubs reliever had hit a homer since 1924. (Rosy Ryan, per Cubs.com)
