Back when the 2017 MLB schedule was released, the Chicago Cubs were set to open up their season against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Monday, April 3.
And then they had to go and make history by winning the 2016 World Series.Â
So, ESPN presumably asked Major League Baseball to move things around, in order to give the Cubs and Cardinals first billing of the season, and MLB obliged.
It now looks like the Cubs and Cardinals will kick off the 2017 season with the Sunday Night Baseball opener on ESPN (h/t to BleedCubbieBlue for first noticing the change in the Cubs’ schedule). The change has not officially been announced by the teams or ESPN.

The game is scheduled for 7:35 CT on Sunday, April 2 [Brett: strike that, in the time between when Michael wrote this and right now, it’s been changed to “TBD” on the time, though I’m still assuming it will be the Sunday Night opener], and will be followed by an off-day on Monday, April 3 (because the opening to every baseball season is always the biggest tease). The two teams will then reconvene on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:15 CT followed by an afternoon start (12:45 CT) on Wednesday for Game 3 of the opening series.
With the @Cubs scheduled for Opening Night 2017 against the Cardinals, they'll have played the last game of 2016 and the first game of 2017.

Presumably, the Cardinals will then forfeit the rest of the season, after having been beaten so badly in three straight games in front of their home crowd. The Cubs will be projected to reach the World Series once again, and begin their five-year straight World Series streak. So there’s a lot to look forward to.
