I assume you’ve heard of Taijuan Walker by now, as he’s been one of the better pitching prospects in baseball for a while. He’s dealt with injuries and hasn’t put it together in the big leagues yet, but he’s an exciting young arm that I’d imagine a number of teams would want to have. And it’s the new Diamondbacks front office that pulls it off.
They also get infielder Ketel Marte, also a notable prospect, albeit one coming off a terrible season in the big leagues in 2016.
In exchange, the Mariners are getting reclaimed infielder Jean Segura, who raked last year with the Diamondbacks after the Brewers gave up on him.
I don’t know much about Haniger (outfield prospect) or Curtis (lefty relief prospect), other than Haniger was a top ten-ish system prospect for the Diamondbacks (albeit in a weak system), and Curtis was a fast-moving relief-only guy in the minor leagues who debuted to poor numbers in the big leagues in 2016.
This will take some time to process, but it’s certainly a big trade, and it’s a bit of an unusual one, given the young players going in each direction. Some creativity put this one together.
Other bits from the rumor mill earlier today if you missed it.
