ELOY! The Cubs’ top prospect, Eloy Jimenez, gets a start in left field and bats cleanup, which is total Spring Training eye candy. He’s not a threat to make the roster or anything, but getting this experience in before he’s sent to minor league camp is fantastic (for him, and for the fans).
Jason Heyward leads off again today, and as the DH, you know the score: he’s getting in as much time at the plate as possible this Spring to really drive home and lock in the swing changes. I liked what I saw yesterday.
Another day and another position for utility men Chesny Young and Jemile Weeks. Young will head to the minor leagues in time, but he could have a big league future. Weeks has an outside shot at winning a bench job with the big league team, but it would probably take an injury or two.
Jeimer Candelario plays first base, a necessary display of versatility if he’s going to contribute to the big league team at some point this year (though being able to play a position manned by Anthony Rizzo may not help that much).
We’ll have your usual Pre-Gamin’ later today in advance of the game.
