You gotta sing the first part of the title, and then it makes sense.
Today, the Chicago Cubs made their first cuts of Spring Training, sending six pitchers to minor league camp (Sharma):

All six were non-roster invitees to big league camp, and were not significant threats to make the 25-man roster on opening day. With the days of Spring Training counting down and only so many innings to go around in games, it’s time to start paring down.
That said, it’s important to have upper level depth, and Williams can certainly be a nice depth starter at Iowa. Concepcion and Parra could theoretically emerge as lefty bullpen options, and if Acevedo is fully recovered from his ACL injury last year, there could still be plenty of upside.
Truth be told, though, not every player in big league camp is going to be assured of even a spot at AAA Iowa when the season opens – the Cubs simply brought in an overwhelming volume of depth pieces, particularly on the pitching side (understandably).
More cuts ahead in the coming weeks.
