Spring Training Miscellany: Mariners 11, Cubs 10 – Cubs Offense Was Huge, But, Um
I wish I could show you what I had written here prior to the ninth-inning implosion (part II), but it’ll only serve to frustrate you. For the second straight day, the Chicago Cubs blew a huge late-game lead, and ultimately lost everything in the ninth against the Seattle Mariners. Even in Spring Training, that’s no fun.
But what is fun is that Spring Training standings don’t count toward the playoffs, the Cubs recorded fifteen hits with a prospect-laden lineup, and ultimately scored ten runs (more on the offense in a bit).
Moreover, the Cubs who allowed the damage – Seth Frankoff, Dylan Floro, David Berg, and Maikel Cleto – are not significant threats to make the big league roster out of camp.
- In case you couldn’t tell (you know, due to the immense subtlety), Kyle Hendricks started today’s game for Chicago:

- And as I mentioned, he was not the one against whom the Mariners did their damage:

- That’s a total of five innings, with no earned runs, no walks, five Ks and just two hits this spring from (one of) the Cubs 2016 NL Cy Young finalists. Although Hendricks is looking like he’ll have another strong season in 2017, it’s fair to wonder which version we’re going to get: the 2016 Cy Young version, the solid 2015 version, or something in between (most likely). So far, however, he’s given us no reason to think he’ll be anything but the former.
- On offense, the Cubs slugged their way into 10 runs on 15 hits – TEN of which went for extra-bases. And among those extra base hits, you’ll find homers from Cubs prospects Ian Happ and Chesny Young (which you can watch here). But there was much more than that!
- For example, Albert Almora ripped a triple off the right field wall:

- And Ian Happ added a double to his day:

- All in all, Happ went 3-4 on Friday, coming just a triple shy of the cycle. He’s now got three doubles and a homer on the Spring. Not a bad start, Mr. Happ.
- Other than those performances, Miguel Montero, Jeimer Candelario, Jon Jay, Chris Dominguez, and Jacob Hannemann each added doubles of their own, while Dominguez added a long ball to his day, as well.
- Brett already shared and discussed Kyle Schwarber’s amazing catch in left field from yesterday’s game, but I saw this awesome shot of it on Twitter and felt compared to share it:

- David Ross sent out a picture of him as a child (circa 1914, if my math checks out) and it’s adorbs:

- John Arguello (@CubsDen on Twitter) has some nice shots (as always) of some Cubs pitching prospects:
