The regulars are back today, and we might even be getting a preview of the Opening Day lineup behind starter Jon Lester.
Here’s the Cubs lineup:
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Addison Russell, SS
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Willson Contreras, C
- Tommy La Stella, DH
- Jon Jay, CF
Starting Pitcher: Jon Lester

If I had to take a guess, today, at what the Opening Day lineup against the Cardinals would look like, that’s what I’d have (even right down to Jon Jay starting against Carlos Martinez over Albert Almora). Obviously you’d have Jon Lester there in the 8-spot instead of Tommy La Stella, since everyone hates fun and the DH is not in the NL yet.
Addison Russell is going to get a long look in the 5-spot, I think, and Jason Heyward is going to break up the righties. Willson Contreras will have one of the more challenging spots in the lineup, tasked with batting behind Heyward (debatable how many runners will be on base for him consistently, since we don’t know what Heyward will be this year), and ahead of the pitcher (and thus patience will be extra important).
I like it, though. This feels right.
And, as usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (2:05 CT).
