The last time these two Chicago-based teams squared up, the Cubs gave up an eighth inning lead and the game ended in a tie. Which, lame.
So given that outcome and the fact that today is the last time these two teams will play each other until the end of July, I’d say it’s for all the marbles.
The Cubs are sending former top pitching prospect Duane Underwood to the mound to kick things off, while Rob Zastryzny, Carl Edwards Jr., and others wait in the wings to relieve him.
Underwood can very much still make something of himself (he still has the ceiling), but even Luke suggests that it’ll be an uphill battle:
Staying healthy and on the mound would certainly be a big help, and a move to the bullpen where he can pitch more off his fastball could benefit him as well. Even so, it is getting easier to imagine a future in which Underwood falls off the prospect rankings entirely.
With Dylan Cease, Jose Albertos, Oscar de la Cruz, Eddie Butler, Alec Mills, and many others all also prepping for the most important baseball season of their career to date, 2017 is looking like a transformative year for many of the Cubs top Minor League pitching prospects.
