Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs 15, A’s 11 – Offense Aplenty, Roster Talk, Saying Goodbye

Chicago Cubs

Another high-scoring, Spring Training affair for the Cubs, who close down the Cactus League slate with a 15-11 win over the A’s!

  • The Cubs scored in every inning except the 8th (and 9th, but they didn’t bat in the 9th, which can’t be held against them, right?). Although they gave up an 8-run fourth inning to the A’s, the Cubs came back to win. Were this the regular season, this game would be talked about for weeks.
  • As it stands, we’ll probably talk about it for hours. It was a homer bonanza, as we’ve already got a post on Kyle Schwarber’s leadoff homer and Albert Almora Jr.’s grand slam, as well as another post on Kyle Schwarber’s other homer and Willson Contreras’s homer. The Cubs added doubles in the game from Kris Bryant, Ian Happ, Victor Caratini, and Carlos Penalver (two of ’em). Nine of the Cubs’ fifteen hits in the game were for extra bases. Keep raking, gentlemen.
  • I would say that John Lackey had a forgettable outing, but, given his stature and career, I doubt he even took note of the runs as they were scoring. He sounded upbeat in quotes after his 3.2 inning appearance, so I reckon the seven hits, one walk, and seven runs didn’t bother him too much. He’ll be ready when the bell rings in St. Louis next week. Save it for them.
  • Expected Cubs relievers Koji Uehara, Justin Grimm, and Carl Edwards Jr. were all great, none allowing an earned run and notching at least one strikeout. Rob Zastryzny pitched the final two innings, clean, with three strikeouts.
  • Rick Sutcliffe gets the nice shot of Grandpa Ross with his younger brother:

  • That’s a lot of baseballs:
