Hooray! Prospect time … Again!
After already taking a look at the South Bend Cubs roster just a little while ago, another one of the Cubs Minor League affiliates – this time, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans – have announced their preliminary rosters.

Immediately, you’ll notice some big name prospects like right-handed pitcher – and sometimes Cubs’ top pitching prospect – Oscar de la Cruz, as well as the Cubs first overall pick (albeit in third round) from the 2016 MLB Draft, Thomas Hatch.
In fact, most of the prospect draw from this roster is on the pitching side, with guys like Ryan Kellogg, Dillon Maples, and Justin Steele all with plenty to prove (and plenty of upside) in 2017.
Notice, however, that I said “most,” of the prospect draw, because it is very certainly not all. In the outfield, the Cubs are deploying Eddy Martinez, who remains (in my opinion) a very interesting name to watch this season. And, of course, although he’s not on the roster right now, this is likely where the Cubs best overall prospect, Eloy Jimenez, will head as soon as he’s right and healthy (he’s resting and rehabbing a sore shoulder in extended Spring Training).
Like last time, there will be much more to discuss about these prospects – and the rest of the minor league crew! – as the minor league seasons get underway.
