The Cubs’ first pick in the 2016 draft, Thomas Hatch (3rd round), makes his professional debut tonight. Weather permitting, he’ll take the mound for Myrtle Beach in Lynchburg at 6:30 PM ET.
Also notable on the pitching side today is the Cubs’ debut of Alex Mills. He starts for Iowa in Oklahoma City. Mills, if you’ve forgotten, is the pitcher the Cubs recieved from the Royals in exchange for Donnie Dewees. The Royals ran into a roster crunch that forced them to let Mills go; I doubt they were too thrilled about having to deal him. He is probably going to be compared to Kyle Hendricks quite a bit thanks to his control-based, groundball-generating pitching style. Tonight we start to find out just how valid those comparisons will be.
