Brewers. You have awakened the beast.
The Cubs’ offense once again showed up strong and healthy out of the gate, putting up a four spot in the first inning, complete with a Miguel Montero stolen base. The team put up double digit hits once again, and it could have been a lot more if not for some stellar Brewers plays in the field (but, like I said this morning, I’m not gonna complain about BABIP!).

Jake Arrieta was excellent once again, whiffing ten Brewers, against just two walks and three hits. The only damage he gave up was on a three-run homer to Ryan Braun, which, well, it happens. More on Arrieta’s start later.
The story of the day, though, has to be Jason Heyward at the plate. Although the line shows up with just two hits, three of those aforementioned stellar Brewers plays came on would-be Heyward hits. Everything he hit today was scalded, and he looked really good. Can we say that about a single game of his at the plate all of last season? Where he wrecked the ball five straight times? If it happened, I sure can’t remember. Get that comfort with the swing back, Jason. Get that confidence.
