Cubs Minor League Daily: Ian Happ Homered for the THIRD STRAIGHT Game (VIDEO)

Another day, another opportunity to type that Ian Happ hit a home run. That could become a daily part of the Daily.

That is to say, Ian Happ homered again for the Iowa Cubs. No big deal. Just his third straight game with a homer.

He hit this one from the left side (again) and over the center field fence:

Elsewhere, in the system, the South Bend Cubs had started their season with a 32-inning scoreless streak (yes, you read that correctly). Finally, they got on the board yesterday.

It might be more accurate to say the top third of the order got on the board. All of the runs were scored by the first two hitters in the lineup (Zack Short and Isaac Paredes), and the number three hitter (Alberto Mineo) drove in five.

That offensive surge led to the South Bend win, and that means every team in the organization has now picked up their first win.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Oklahoma City 12, Iowa 1
The wind was blowing to left at 24 MPH, but that doesn’t explain Iowa’s lack of runs.

  • Jake Buchanan: 5.2 IP, 8 R, 11 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • John Andreoli: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Ian Happ: 1 for 4, HR
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Pensacola 4, Tennessee 3
Tennessee took a lead in the first, but lost it in the ninth.

  • Preston Morrison: 5 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 3 K
  • Brad Markey: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Charcer Burks: 1 for 5, HR. He led off the game with a homer.
  • David Bote: 4 for 5, SB
  • Jeffrey Baez: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Trey Martin: 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB

    High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Myrtle Beach 4, Lynchburg 3
The Pelicans survived a late rally for their third win.

  • Oscar De La Cruz: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Tommy Thorpe: 2.1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Trent Giambrone: 1 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Eddy Martinez: 0 for 3, 2 BB
  • Daniel Spingola: 2 for 5
  • Matt Rose: 3 for 4, 2B, HR
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 7, West Michigan 1
The top three hitters in the lineup finished a combined 8 for 11.

  • Manuel Rondon: 5.2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Wyatt Short: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Zack Short: 3 for 3, 2B, BB, SB
  • Isaac Paredes: 3 for 4, 2 2B
  • Alberto Mineo: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • In addition to his homer, Happ also committed two errors at second base.
  • De La Cruz threw 86 pitches in his five inning debut. The results were good, though. If he keeps this up (and that is a big if), a mid-summer move to Tennessee is not out of the question.
  • In a trade you have probably forgotten about, on July 4, 2015, the Cubs sent minor league catcher Rafael Lopez to the Angels for a pitched named Manuel Rondon. We did not hear much from Rondon the rest of the 2015, and in 2016 his excellent work in the Eugene rotation (12 starts, 57 IP, 1.10 ERA) was overshadowed by the bigger name pitching prospects on that team.
  • But it appears this right hander is going to pick up right where he left off. Keep a close eye on Rondon this season. If he repeats his 2016 success, we may have a nice story on our hands.
