Hoo, doggies. That was a bad one.
I had much more typed out in the way of thoughts about the game and our reaction to it, but, like I would advise you, I’m instead going to have a good rest of my day with the family and sleep on that dumper of a game and series.
Jon Lester was fantastic once again today, and he got some help from Willson Contreras behind the plate (though there remain some ups and downs there – hey, first full season as a starting catcher). But the bullpen following him featured a truly implosive performance from otherwise solid Koji Uehara and Justin Grimm, and the Cubs couldn’t hold on to the very slim 1-0 lead they’d built.

And that is, of course, as much the story as the bullpen. The Cubs had chance after chance to add runs today (like yesterday), and missed out. Sometimes, that happens. It’s a storyline every year, and it’s pretty much always going to frustrate the hell out of you when it happens. These guys will hit. Right now, they’re not.
So it’s an unfortunate sweep at the hands of the Pirates, who are now tied with the Cubs in the very, very early going.
