Cubs Minor League Daily: The Pitching Was Awesome, Especially Dylan Cease

Two different Cubs’ affiliates pitched combined shutouts last night, and two other starting pitchers actually turned in pretty decent games. As did the bullpens pretty much across the board. So far as the organizational pitching is concerned, last night is about as good as it gets.

We’ll start with Dylan Cease, the Cubs best pitching prospect and third ranked prospect in general. He tossed six innings of no hit baseball to open a combined one-hit shutout (though I suppose you can call it a sort-of no-hitter if you want). He struck out seven with a combination of a mid-90s fastball and a very nice breaking pitch.

Both can be seen in the video of his seventh strikeout on the night:

Matt Swarmer lost the no hitter, but pitched three shutout innings to complete the game.

Meanwhile, up in Tennessee, Jen-Ho Tseng tossed six innings of one hit ball to shut down Birmingham. Daury Torrez and James Pugliese completed that shutout.

Iowa recieved 4.1 innings of one hit ball from Seth Frankoff to start off their win, and Myrtle Beach saw Oscar De La Cruz pitch four quality scoreless innings to open their contest. Admittedly, the wheels came off a bit in the fifth, but it was still a nice start.

Given the depth of pitching in this system, I doubt this is the only night of great pitching like this we see this year. I wouldn’t even be surprised if we see a full nine innings no-hitter a time or two.

    Other Notes

  • Both of Andreoli’s home runs were solo shots. Davis clobbered a grand slam for Iowa.
  • Cease was allowed to throw 92 pitches last night, and that is also an encouraging thing. If the Cubs still had serious concerns about the elbow, his pitch count would be a lot more limited.
  • You can find even more footage of Cease’s dominant outing on South Bend’s YouTube page:
