It’s been a strong run for the man in charge of the Chicago Cubs’ baseball operations. Not only did he lead the Cubs to their first World Series title in 108 years, and not only did he guide the organizational turnaround that set up that run (and also set up future runs), but he did that on the heels of performing the same kind of curse-busting feat in Boston.

For his success, Epstein has been lauded with awards and honors, from being named one of TIME’s most influential people to being named the best leader in the world, according to Forbes.
Given his tangential involvement with politics over the years, as well as the current political climate, it was only natural that folks would start to comment – even if half-jokingly – about a future in politics for Epstein.
Today’s read from Politico about Epstein, with an interview of political insider and Cubs fan David Axelrod, feels a lot less half-jokey. Axelrod is effusive in his praise for Epstein, and even compares him favorably as a potential political candidate to former president Barack Obama.
That said, in the end, Axelrod believes that although Epstein holds many of the qualities you’d look for in a political leader, he’s not sure that’s the life Epstein is going to want to lead. Axelrod does believe, however, that Epstein will be approached about heading into politics eventually.
In any case, Epstein signed a new five-year deal with the Cubs just before the end of last season, so I’m going to assume he’ll be with the organization for those five years. What happens after that is anyone’s guess. Where does a baseball executive even go after doing what he’s done in Boston and Chicago? I guess that’s why people start asking questions about supposedly grander pursuits.
