Whoopsiedoodle: The Cubs’ World Series Trophy Got Dinged Up

Chicago Cubs

Not even the Chicago Cubs’ World Series Trophy is safe from possible injury.

According to a Boston Globe report, the trophy – which is rather fragile at the top – lost some of its flags this past weekend when it did a little crowdsurfing at the Hot Stove Cool Music fundraiser in Boston. A Cubs spokesperson said the damage was promptly repaired, and the trophy was able to make its next scheduled appearance the following day (Tribune). In other words, no disabled list stint was required.

In the end, I can’t help but wonder if the Cubs got all the flags back that night (the Globe piece suggests that was the route taken for the fix), or put replacement flags on the trophy. And if they were replacement flags – they probably weren’t, but it sends me somewhere fun – are there are now some flags from the trophy out there floating around in Boston? And then I wonder: if someone offered me one of those ill-gotten flags, would I take it? Would I keep it secret, or would I return it to the Cubs? I’m a do-gooder dork, so I would almost certainly return the flag. But maybe not after first taking it to one game with me, and, while holding it delicately between my thumb and index finger, and waving it over my head while singing ‘We Are the Champions.’
