Yesterday’s loss was a tough one – the Cubs came within one strike of winning – but it was one of the more exciting games the Cubs have played this season. Despite scoring just two runs and allowing only three, it felt action packed on both sides of the ball all day.
Hopefully, tonight is equally exciting, but the outcome is very different.

Starting for the Cubs tonight is lefty Brett Anderson. He is probably hoping tonight is nothing like his last start – Monday – at Wrigley Field: 1.1 IP, 7H, 7ER, 1BB, 1K (although, to be fair, the conditions that night (rainy, cold) were truly horrendous). Even still, his season numbers are quite poor (6.23 ERA, 4.51 FIP), and are likely to stay that way until he starts inducing more ground balls (like he has for most of his career).
Opposing Anderson and the Cubs is the Yankees’ left-hander, Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery made his Major League debut earlier this season and has had better peripheral numbers (3.64 FIP) than results so far (4.15 ERA). And while he has an excellent 25.0% strikeout rate, he’s walked 10.9% of hitters this season (which bodes well for this particular Cubs team). As far as his arsenal goes, Montgomery primarily mixes a low 90s four-seam fastball (45.4%), with a curveball (22.2%), change-up (17.7%) and cutter (14.7%).
Let’s see if the Cubs can get a win tonight and avoid the early series loss.
