Cubs Minor League Daily: Outfield Prospect Daniel Spingola, Thief of Homers

Chicago Cubs

Daniel Spingola is a left handed hitting outfielder in his second full season as a professional. The Cubs drafted him late in the 2015 draft, and since then he his bat has shown flashes that keeps him perpetually on the edge of the prospect radar despite the fact that he’s already 24 and and playing in High A. For example, through 126 PA his line this year reads .343/.429/.583.

One thing we don’t talk about very often is Spingola’s defense. And then this happened:

I think it is safe to say he’s having a good season.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Las Vegas 10, Iowa 5
Iowa out hit Las Vegas 12 to 10.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Montgomery 7, Tennessee 3
The recently hot Smokies have dropped three in a row at home.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Buies Creek 4, Myrtle Beach 2
This game was scoreless when the seventh inning began.

Low A: South Bend Cubs
Dayton 4, South Bend 2
A pair of errors proved costly in this one.

Other Notes

  • Zastryzny left Iowa’s game in the first with an apparent injury. So far, that’s all we know.
  • Shortstop Zack Short is up to ten steals for South Bend.
  • And finally, how about a look at the first homer of the season for Eloy Jimenez? There are two things to note in this particular video, I think. First, Jimenez is a very large person. Second, he can hit a baseball a very long way.
