Chicago Cubs Lineup: Trying Again with Heyward Back, Happ In, and Schwarber Bumped Down

Chicago Cubs

We got yesterday’s lineup before the game was rained out, so today’s iteration was pretty easy to predict.

Here’s the Cubs lineup for today’s game against the Brewers, the same as was announced yesterday:

  1. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  2. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  3. Kris Bryant, 3B
  4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  5. Ian Happ, CF
  6. Jason Heyward, RF
  7. Willson Contreras, C
  8. Addison Russell, SS
  9. Jake Arrieta, P

So, again, there’s a whole lot of changing around today.

Ian Happ stays with the big team as Jason Heyward returns, with Happ the one playing center field. Ben Zobrist bounces up to the leadoff spot, with Kyle Schwarber – and everyone else – moving down a spot. That permits the team not to stack lefties in a row (which Joe Maddon did not want to do). Is this just a one-time thing against righty Chase Anderson? Or is this a change? Maddon had recently been pretty adamant that Schwarber was going to keep leading off, but I guess we’ll see.

Anderson is a reverse-split guy for his career (righties have hit him slightly better than lefties) for what that’s worth, but I’m not sure how much that’s actually informing this particular lineup, since five of the first six batters he’ll face will be batting from the lefty side.

Addison Russell returns to the lineup, and slides all the way down in the 8-hole. The presence of Happ in center field is your primary explanation there. Hopefully Russell can show discipline in front of the pitcher.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (1:20pm CT). In the meantime, treatchyoself to some perusing of this morning’s Bullets, or this sale:
