Cubs Minor League Daily: Three Homers For Iowa, Eugene To Open Soon

The Eugene Emeralds ended an championship drought of their own in 2016, and we are about three weeks away from the Cubs Short Season A team taking the field to defend their title. Rosters have not been announced, and won’t be until a few days before the season begins on June 15.

Generally speaking, though, Short Season A includes a lot of college players from the current year (2017, in our case) draft, as well as high school players from the previous year (2016) and international players who signed over the previous few seasons. Since the Cubs did not draft many high school players at all in 2016, or non-pitchers in general for that matter, I suspect their lineup will feature a number of 2017 draftees and quite a few international players. The pitching is likely to be the most interesting group, though.

Headlining that pitching may very well be Jose Albertos, one of the most exciting and least seen pitching prospects in the system. The scouting reports promise a hard fastball with good movement and solid command, but the reality is an 18-year-old who has barely been on the mound in a Cubs’ uniform in competitive game action. If he does make the Eugene roster, we should get a good look at him thanks to the high quality MiLB.tv feed of the Emeralds.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Cubs 7, Tacoma 6
Iowa turned a big first inning into a very narrow win.

  • Casey Kelly: 3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 6 H, 3 BB, 1 K
  • Dave Berg: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 K
  • Pierce Johnson: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 K
  • John Andreoli: 1 for 4, 3B
  • Jeimer Candelario: 1 for 4, HR
  • Chris Dominguez: 1 for 4, HR
  • Stephen Bruno: 1 for 3, HR
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies

    Tennessee was rained out.

    High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Salem 10, Myrtle Beach 5
After five and a half innings the Pelicans led 4-0.

  • Tom Hatch: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Bryant Flete: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Daniel Spingola: 2 for 4, BB
  • Tyler Alamo: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Trent Giambrone: 2 for 4
  • Jesse Hodges: 3 for 3, 2 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
Bowling Green 11, South Bend 1
The Cubs managed just two hits in this one.

  • Manuel Rondon: 4.2 IP, 8 R (7 ER), 11 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Michael Knighton: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Zack Short: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • Casey Kelly needed 82 pitches to get through his three innings of work despite being spotted a large lead early.
  • By my count, the Tennessee Smokies have already been rained out nine times this season. That has resulted in seven doubleheaders, and a couple other doubleheaders that were themselves rained out. I don’t recall any Cubs’ affiliate, even the proverbial rain soaked Daytona team, being rained out with this regularity. If the weather patterns hold (and they probably won’t), the Smokies are on pace to be rained out 29 times this season.
  • As rough as yesterday was for South Bend, it could have been worse had it not been for former independent leagues outfielder Brandon Cummins. The right fielder had two outfield assists in the game, one each at home and at third.
  • Bingo has become a popular event in the Bleacher Nation comment threads, and now the Iowa Cubs are getting in the act. Tuesday nights are Baseball Bingo nights, and while I doubt the Iowa boards are quite as entertaining as the Bleacher Nation ones, the only one to be sure is for someone to head out to the ballpark and check them out.
