Despite a one hour rain delay to open the game, things wrapped up nearly at the same time you would have expected for an on-time start.
That’s thanks to Jon Lester, who was absolutely dominant all night long for the Cubs, cruising through the Giants’ lineup like he was facing … well … the Giants’ lineup. But, hey, it’s still impressive! The Cubs haven’t received much in the way of deep starts, so getting an extremely efficient complete game from Lester tonight was huge.
The defense was solid again in this one, and it would be nice to think they’re turning a corner on that front after starting the year surprisingly slowly (after being one of the best defenses in history in 2016).
Offensively, the Cubs got their runs courtesy of a monster Kyle Schwarber shot, a rocket Jason Heyward shot, and a two-run Anthony Rizzo shot. That’s the nice thing about home runs on a night when the offense wasn’t actually doing a whole lot otherwise.
