Cubs Minor League Daily: Survey Of Some League Leading Cubs Prospects

It would probably come as no surprise to you to learn that Iowa’s Jeimer Candelario is second in the Pacific Coast League in OPS (1.081). He was arguably the best all around hitter in the farm system when the season began, and I think he would still hold that title today. His breakthrough to the majors is only a matter of time.

You might be surprised to learn that ranking seventh in the Double A Southern League in OPS is outfielder Charcer Burks (.873). And he is still second on his own team, behind third baseman Jason Vosler (.911).

Myrtle Beach also has an outfielder on the OPS leaderboard: number five Daniel Spingola with a .933.

And as for the Midwest League… I’m not going to tell you yet. You’ve seen his name a ton of times in the Daily, and while you probably did not know about him when the season began, he should be one of the first hitters you think of when you think of South Bend these days. He is eighth in the league with an OPS of .894. Any ideas?

The answer is at the bottom of the Daily.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 5, Reno 0
Five different pitchers contributed to this shutout.

  • Juan Paniagua: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Miguel Mejia: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Conor Mullee: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 K
  • Dylan Floro: 1.1 IP, 1 BB
  • Justin Grimm: 1 IP, 1 H
  • John Andreoli: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Stephen Bruno: 3 for 4
  • Ali Solis: 2 for 4, HR
  • Elliot Soto: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 5, Biloxi 4 in ten innings
The Smokies won it on a walk off walk.

  • Zach Hedges: 5 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 K
  • Ryan McNeil: 1 IP, 1 BB
  • Andury Acevedo: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • David Bote: 2 for 4, BB
  • Ian Rice: 1 for 4, HR
  • Carlos Penalver: 2 for 4
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 3 in eight innings
No Pelican batter struck out in this game.

  • Justin Steele: 7 IP, 3 R, 8 H, 5 K
  • Pedro Araujo: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Bryant Flete: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Eddy Martinez: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Tyler Alamo: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Andruw Monasterio: 2 for 3, BB
  • Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 2
Spingola cut down a runner at home, and that may well have proved to be the difference.

  • Kyle Miller: 4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Casey Bloomquist: 2 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Dillon Maples: 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Tyler Alamo: 1 for 3, 2B
  • Eddy Martinez: 1 for 2, BB, SB
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
Bowling Green 13, South Bend 3
The Cubs scored three times on four hits. If you want a silver lining, I suppose that could count.

  • Tyson Miller: 3.1 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 1 K
  • Matt Swarmer: 2.2 IP, 8 R (7 ER), 10 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Jared Cheek: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Wladimir Galindo: 2 for 3, HR, BB
  • Luis Ayala: 1 for 3, HR
  • Other Notes

  • Yesterday was the second straight start for Paniagua, and while he did not match the 4.2 innings of his previous start, all in all it was probably his best outing of the season.
  • Yesterday also marked the season debut for former Yankee farmhand Connor Mullee. The right hander opened the season on the disabled list. With the Yankees he showed a good mix of strikeouts and ground ball outs, and the Cubs witnessed a little of both on Thursday.
  • We haven’t done a Smokies highlight video lately, so how about one featuring a walk off walk.
  • Number eight in OPS for the Midwest League is shortstop Zack Short. He is also the first member of that leaderboard to have a higher walk rate (19.5%) than strikeout rate (16.8%).
