The MLB Draft begins in just over two weeks, on June 12, and the Chicago Cubs will have two picks that night – numbers 27 and 30, overall.
It’s been nearly two years since the Cubs had a first round pick, and that guy is currently patrolling center field for the big league team. Although the Cubs won’t be picking quite that high this time around (Ian Happ was taken with the 9th overall pick in 2015), they can still get some significant talent there at the end of the first round, and throughout the draft.
Some recent draft items to peruse …
Jim Callis at MLB Pipeline released a first round mock draft today, and the Cubs land high school shortstop Nick Allen with pick 27, a youngster we’ve heard about before. Callis calls Allen “the best defender in the Draft,” which would be a nice get at shortstop in the late first round. Because of his size, there are questions about the bat, but a top tier defender at shortstop with at least some potential in the bat is a very intriguing package. Jonathan Mayo’s first iteration of the MLB Pipeline mock also had Allen going to the Cubs at 27.
At pick 30, Callis has the Cubs taking junior college righty Nate Pearson out of Florida, a big, hard-throwing righty whom you can see discussed here:
FanGraphs also includes overall thoughts on the draft class from Eric Longenhagen, who believes the strength of the draft, at least at the top, is in college pitching. In contrast, the class is weak in college bats, according to Longenhagen.
Some have been expecting Hunter Greene to become the first ever high school right-handed pitcher to go number one overall (he’s also quite a shortstop), but Jon Heyman reports that the Twins won’t be taking the chance.
