I cannot say with any level of confidence that the Cubs are at their low point for the year, but I can tell you that I am.
It’s been a while since an individual game angered me that much. Obligatory “I’d still bet on the Cubs in the Central” and all that, but I am freaking apoplectic right now.
The combination of excrement that rained down in that one:
The Padres are terrible.
The Cubs had already lost three in a row.
The Padres got their winning margin because of a perfectly-sequenced bloop, infield hit, HBP, and home run.
When it looked like the Cubs might finally do something, Jason Heyward hit the ball as hard as you can in the 7th inning with the bases loaded, and it was right at the second baseman – instead of literally anywhere effing else – for an inning-ending double play.
The Cubs hit ANOTHER would-be home run that went a foot foul.
The Cubs had three hits. THREE!
The Cubs went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position, and have just two hits in their last 36 at bats with runners in scoring position. TWO!
The Cubs had the opposing starting pitcher out after four innings, and were into one of the worst bullpens in baseball for five SCORELESS innings.
The Padres walked 10 Cubs batters and hit two more. That’s 12(!!!) free base runners! And the Cubs scored TWO RUNS. WHAT. THE. YOU KNOW THE LAST WORD.

Cubs vs Astros — Splitting a four-gamer against the current, badly-struggling Miami Marlins is unquestionably a bad outcome, especially when one of those two losses was a win-in-hand that slipped away into the seats. But the typical, and maddeningly correct,...
