First Place By a Fraction of a Percent: That’s Cub (No, But Seriously, I’m Quite Happy)

Chicago Cubs

Good morning, friends!

Although this is a dance we’ve done before, and although it isn’t exactly an enormous lead, it still feels good to say it: the Chicago Cubs are in first place!

With their fourth straight win last night, and the Brewers’ loss to the Giants, the Cubs pulled ever so slightly ahead of the Brewers in the NL Central:

Boom: the Cubs are back where they belong.

Other than joy, yes, what you take from the standings is that the NL Central has been almost unbelievably mediocre so far this season.

Consider this: just one other last place team (Toronto – .483) has a better winning percentage than the last place Pirates, and no other first place team has a worse wining percentage than the Cubs. The other last place teams in baseball are 6.0, 6.5, 12.5, 15.5, and 16.5 games back. In the NL Central, all teams are within 3.5 games of each other.

To put it gastronomically, the NL Central is a tightly compressed melange of plain yogurt and rice cakes. The meh is almost overpowering.

But at least the Cubs are the top rice cake, so to speak. For today.
