Well, that was unquestionably a bad loss to a bad team. It’s nice that the Cubs won the series – as they should have – but they really could have had today’s game.
When a combination of Eddie Butler (who was very inefficient, but was not hit hard) and the bullpen allows just three runs, and the Cubs are facing an inexperienced starter who gets hurt early and then a terrible opposing bullpen … dang, you gotta win that game.
It wasn’t to be today, as the Cubs hit the ball reasonably well at times, but didn’t get the hits to fall in. I mean, for heaven’s sake, the Cubs struck out only five times in the game. It wasn’t like they were flailing away. Argh.
Only a two-run shot by Ian Happ got anything going. And it wasn’t enough.
That the decisive run scored on a bases-loaded Koji Uehara walk was just the icing on the cake of this one.
