For the second straight day, the Cubs staring pitcher gave up three runs in the first inning, and then went on to pitch very well from there.
The difference today, however, is that the Cubs’ offense couldn’t climb back in it. And that, despite repeated, desperate efforts by Marlins pitchers to give the Cubs baserunners.
Whether it was a double play, a caught stealing, or an ill-time strikeout, the Cubs kept finding ways to roll snake eyes with runners on base.
Hopefully Addison Russell will not be out too long – he left this one in the fourth with shoulder discomfort – or this game will have been a lovely mix of all kinds of awful, rather than just the run-of-the-mill awful we’ve come to expect every other day.
So many missed opportunities. Just ridiculous. And now the Cubs get to go to Washington … yay …
