The Cubs have put themselves in a position to take three out of four with a win today in Miami.
No matter how strong the opposing team, that’s not easy to do (especially on the road). And, sure, there’s been plenty of inconsistency this season, but a win today – before they head out on the road for another tough four-game set against the Nationals – would go a long way. Please get it done, Cubs.
Fortunately, Mike Montgomery is making his fourth start for the Cubs this season, and has looked better in every single one of them. His latest start, a six inning shutout against the Padres, was absolutely brilliant and featured just two walks (which is good, considering some of his early season command issues). As a starter this year, Montgomery has 2.40 ERA (3.47 FIP).
Edinson Volquez is starting opposite Montgomery, though he is now four games removed from his no-hitter against the Diamondbacks. And despite following that game up with a 7.0 inning shutout against the Pirates, he still has a 4.19 ERA and 4.28 FIP this season. He’s beatable. Let’s see if the Cubs pull it off.
