A few weeks ago, Peter Gammons dropped a line on the radio about hearing that 24-year-old superstar Bryce Harper, a free agent after next season, wanted to play for the Chicago Cubs.
Understandably, it set us all atwitter.
The reality is that Harper’s free agency is still a good ways away, financially fitting him into the fold as the Cubs’ other young stars become more expensive would be challenging, other teams will aggressively pursue him, and it’s hard to say just how much his preference (even if true) will factor into his decision.
All that said, Harper teased a little more overnight when he posted a picture of he and his wife with Kris Bryant and his wife on Instagram with the hashtag “Back2BackOneDay”:

Obviously he’s just having a little fun there with a friend, but it does make you wonder about how much the two would like to play together. It’s something even Bryant has conceded.
Of course, even if they play together someday, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be with the Cubs. That might be their first opportunity, since Bryant is under team control through 2021, but it won’t necessarily be their last.
This is all mostly just good fun, and Harper’s free agency was already going to be a huge storyline for all of baseball next year.
