Amid the swirl of clubhouse controversy and significant roster changes, a portion of the reigning champion Chicago Cubs have headed to the White House while in Washington for a second visit with the president.
Unlike the first visit, however, which took place with the prior administration, this visit is with the current president, Donald Trump. All previously mud-slinging in the direction of the Cubs and their owners has, presumably, been forgiven.
The team presented the president with a personalized gold championship jersey, as well as a scoreboard sign, as the Commissioner’s Trophy adorned the desk in the Oval Office.
The political layers here are almost entirely unavoidable, but I will still do my best to avoid them. The timing for the Cubs’ championship and initial visit was such that I could certainly understand some players and personnel wanting an opportunity to visit the White House again. So now they have.
