July begins as … well … the rest of the season has gone. Disappointingly.
The Cubs slipped below .500 as they couldn’t add on to an early 3-0 lead, and couldn’t prevent the Reds from scoring the game’s other five runs.
The Cubs weren’t helped by a comically bad and one-sided strike zone, but Eddie Butler also had his characteristically poor command, and this time around he didn’t get the same kind of good batted ball luck as he did against the Nationals (including giving up a two-out, two-run single to the opposing pitcher). Moreover, the Cubs repeatedly failed to take advantage of great scoring opportunities, notching their three runs on two homers and that was it.
Coming off a great win in Washington on Thursday, the Cubs have laid back-to-back eggs here in Cincinnati against a Reds team that came into the series struggling to win.
