When writing up the Cubs’ recent minor league roster movements yesterday, it turns out there was a big one I failed to mention: righty Jen-Ho Tseng is now an Iowa Cub. And he is expected to start this weekend.
Tseng is having a very nice season. In 15 starts for Tennessee he had an ERA of 2.99 and posted a career high K/9 of 8.27. That is a significant stat for Tseng given that, up to 2017, he had relied on his command to get hitters out and did not show much of an ability to use his stuff to get strikeouts. The ability to strike out roughly a batter an inning is a pretty big deal here.
If – and this is a giant if – Tseng does well in a few Iowa starts, it is not out of the realm of possibility that he gets the call to Chicago sometime this season. Generally speaking, once a player reaches Double A he is considered to be available for call up should the situation arise. Stepping up to Triple A takes them that much closer. I don’t think he would be the first choice, but if the timing lined up right, you never know, especially given how many injuries there have been in the Iowa rotation.
Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 7, Omaha 5
Iowa piled on six runs in the second, and that proved to be enough.
Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Chattanooga 6, Tennessee 1
On the good side, Tennessee pitchers did not walk anyone.
High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Frederick 8, Myrtle Beach 3
There was plenty of offense in this game, but most of it was on the Frederick side.
Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 11, Dayton 4
Suddenly the Cubs can’t help scoring runs in bunches.
Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Eugene 5, Tri-City 2
Eugene bounced back over .500 again.
Rookie: AZL Cubs
The Cubs had the day off.
