A little over a month ago, Major League Baseball began investigating allegations of domestic violence levied on social media against Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell. The allegations came via a friend of Russell’s wife Melisa, who has since filed for divorce after her own allegations of infidelity. She has elected not to speak publicly about her friend’s claims.
That MLB investigation is, as far as we know, still ongoing, but Russell’s agent Scott Boras does not expect it will ultimately go anywhere.
Speaking with the Sun-Times and the Tribune, Boras said the facts he has do not suggest there is a foundation for the allegations, and that he does not “foresee anything in the future going forward.”
In one respect, you probably wouldn’t expect an agent to say anything otherwise about his burgeoning, 23-year-old star. On the other hand, Boras didn’t necessarily have to say anything more than “there’s an investigation ongoing, and we cannot comment during that process.” You can read more from Boras, and on the situation, here in the Sun-Times report and here in the Tribune.
Depending on MLB’s findings, Russell could be subject to discipline under the league’s domestic violence policy, regardless of any criminal investigation (which has not, to date, been pursued).
For his part, Russell denied the allegations, and has otherwise chosen not to comment on the matter.
