Cubs Minor League Daily: Three Cubs Make Triple-A All-Star Roster

The Triple-A leagues are into their All-Star breaks, and three Iowa Cubs will (maybe) be playing for the Pacific Coast League.

Victor Caratini received the most votes (from league managers, general managers, and broadcasters) at catcher, but since he is on a major league roster I don’t think he’ll be playing.

Seth Frankoff earns recognition for the quietly good season he is having by picking up the second most votes for starting pitchers. Frankoff’s only real downside this year has been his 1.62 HR/9 total. Other than that, his numbers (4.19 ERA, 4.20 xFIP, 9.12 K/9) have been solid pretty much across the board.

Finally, recent acquisition Matt Carasiti makes the roster by being the highest voted reliever. Carasiti has struck out seven in five innings of work for the Cubs since coming over in the Zac Rosscup trade, and has yet to allow an earned run for Iowa. With Colorado he posted an ERA of 2.37, an xFIP of 3.23, a K/9 of 12.76, and generally looked the part of a very good reliever in doing it.

The Triple-A All Star Game will be played on Wednesday night in Tacoma.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

Iowa is on their All-Star break.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 5, Montgomery 4
The Smokies won as Hendricks began his rehab.

  • Kyle Hendricks: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 K
  • Brett Anderson: 4 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Dillon Maples: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • David Bote: 1 for 3, 2B
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 2 for 4, HR
  • Daniel Spingola: 1 for 2, HR, BB
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Myrtle Beach 10, Frederick 7
The Pelicans won a wild, back and forth contest.

  • Scott Effross: 3.1 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Pedro Araujo: 2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 K
  • Zack Short: 3 for 3, 2B, HR, 3 BB, SB
  • Eddy Martinez: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 4, 2 HR, BB
  • Connor Myers: 3 for 5, 2 2B
  • Robert Garcia: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
    South Bend 15, Dayton 8
Dayton scored eight times in the final three innings in an attempted come back.

  • Jose Paulino: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Vimael Machin: 2 for 6
  • Austin Upshaw: 2 for 5, BB
  • Kevonte Mitchell: 2 for 6, 2B
  • Isaac Paredes: 2 for 4
  • D.J. Wilson: 4 for 5, 2B, HR
  • Alberto Mineo: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Tyler Payne: 2 for 4, BB
  • Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Tri-City 5, Eugene 0
Eugene gave up four in the first, and never got back into the game from there.

  • Javier Assad: 6 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 6 K
  • Casey Ryan: 1 IP, 1 K
  • Rafael Narea: 1 for 3, 2B
  • Rookie: AZL Cubs
    Indians 12, Cubs 5
For a game that featured twenty seven total strikeouts, there was a lot of offense in this one.

  • Rob Zastryzny: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 K
  • Jonathan Sierra: 1 for 4, HR, BB
  • Rafael Mejia: 3 for 4, HR
  • Other Notes

  • Despite hitting a ridiculous 22 home runs in the first round, former Cubs’ prospect Justin Bour did not advance out of the first round in the Home Run Derby. Sadness.
  • Kyle Hendricks only made 45 pitches in his Double A rehab start yesterday, but he also only allowed two hits while striking out two and walking one. We should know what the Cubs’ plans are soon, but based on the pitch count I wouldn’t be surprised if they have him make at least one more start before coming back to Chicago. (It’s also possible he was feeling so good that the Cubs know he can be ready to go from here, and simply threw the rest of his pitches in the bullpen after he departed.)
  • Brett Anderson tossed 74 pitches in his fourth rehab appearance for the Smokies. His GO/AO was a fantastic 4.00; that’s a good sign for Anderson. I would not be surprised to see him back in Chicago in some capacity soon.
  • Scott Effross has mostly pitched in relief for the Pelicans this year, and has picked up four saves in the process. Yesterday marked his first start of the season.
