You probably have heard quite a lot of Eloy Jimenez, the former best prospect in the Cubs’ system, both before and after the trade. And you probably have heard a lot about Dylan Cease, the former best pitching prospect in the Cubs’ system, both before and after the trade. But odds are good you are not as familiar with Matt Rose or Bryant Flete.
Rose is a right-handed slugging first baseman. With South Bend last season he hit 13 homers in 78 games; with Myrtle Beach this season he had already hit 14 in 65 games. Other than his power, though, the rest of his line has not been great this season. He is hitting. .227/.281/.481 with a walk rate of just 5.9% and a strikeout rate of 24.8%. Rose is a guy the White Sox will probably just stash and develop for another couple of years. It is unlikely that he makes it to Chicago, but I suspect the Sox think they can work with him to maintain the power and improve the rest of his overall numbers. Either way, their risk is near zero.
Bryant Flete is a bit of a different story. A left-handed hitting second baseman, Flete is a bit old for High A (he turned 24 in January). His numbers, though, suggest he is due for another shot at the next level. So far this year he is hitting .305/.355/.425 with 6 homers, 4 steals, a walk rate of 6%, and a strikeout rate of just 17.6%. Those aren’t the number of a high ceiling prospect, but they are an indication that Double A at least should be in his future. I would not be shocked to see Flete work his way to Chicago as a light-hitting utility infielder who bounces between Triple A and the majors one day. As with Rose, though, the risk to the Sox is near zero.
Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa was rained out.
Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 5, Mobile 4 in eleven innings.
It took eleven innings, but the Smokies completed their comeback from an early four run deficit.
High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 2
The three hitters the Cubs traded simply walked across the diamond and into the Winston-Salem dugout.
Low A: South Bend Cubs
Quad Cities 5, South Bend 3
Once again, errors came back to hurt the Cubs.
Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Hillsboro 6, Eugene 5
A ninth inning unearned run turned out to be the winning margin for Hillsboro.
Rookie: AZL Cubs
Arizona had the day off.
Other Notes
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
