Chicago Cubs

Is there such a thing as a horrible win? At this point for the Cubs, I mean? Obviously you’ll take anything you can get, but I’m having a very difficult time feeling good about that one.

The Cubs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the third inning thanks to homers from Willson Contreras, Kyle Schwarber, Ben Zobrist, and Jason Heyward. And Mike Montgomery was looking really good, getting weak grounder after weak grounder. The defense was really sharp. We started to think things about the Cubs coming out of the break with renewed fire, focus, and passion.

And then, for the ensuing six innings, the Cubs played about as poorly as a team can play. Montgomery started missing his spots up and paid for it. Justin Grimm came in and couldn’t command anything. Koji Uehara gave up a game-tying two-run shot. The Cubs’ brilliant bullpen – one of the few bright spots in the first half – betrayed them. The bats went totally silent.

It took a 9th inning solo homer from Addison Russell (and an impossible catch by Jason Heyward in the bottom of the frame) to save the day. Whew. We’ll have nicer things to say about this one in the morning, I’m sure.
