In the vast majority of game situations, the sacrifice bunt is a terrible idea. That does not mean that bunting is a useless skill. To the contrary, a smart hitter who can use the bunt to place the ball where he wants it on the infield grass can put an opposing defense in a position where there are no good or easy plays. When it comes to combatting the shift or trying to catch a drawn back infield off guard, the bunt can be a great way to get an unexpected hit.
Or, if you are D.J. Wilson, you can drill a bunt straight down the third base line, inches off the line, and turn it into an RBI single on which a runner scores from second. Yes, second. This was one of the prettiest bunts I have ever seen. In fact, it almost has to be seen to be believed.
The grounds crew should get an assit on that bunt by Wilson. I don’t imagine there are very many diamonds so perfectly maintained that a ball bunted that hard on that path goes perfectly straight that long.
