Cubs Minor League Daily: The Right Way To Bunt Scores a Guy From Second (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

In the vast majority of game situations, the sacrifice bunt is a terrible idea. That does not mean that bunting is a useless skill. To the contrary, a smart hitter who can use the bunt to place the ball where he wants it on the infield grass can put an opposing defense in a position where there are no good or easy plays. When it comes to combatting the shift or trying to catch a drawn back infield off guard, the bunt can be a great way to get an unexpected hit.

Or, if you are D.J. Wilson, you can drill a bunt straight down the third base line, inches off the line, and turn it into an RBI single on which a runner scores from second. Yes, second. This was one of the prettiest bunts I have ever seen. In fact, it almost has to be seen to be believed.

So let’s watch it.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

Iowa was rained out again.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 10, Mobile 4
Sixteen hits and six walks powered the Smokies offensive explosion.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Winston-Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 3
Former Pelicans accounted for half of Winston-Salem’s hits, walks, and extra base hits.

Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 7, Quad Cities 4
For a short time the Cubs trailed by three in this one.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Eugene 2, Hillsboro 0
Four pitchers combined to pitch the shutout.

  • Matt Swarmer: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Ricky Tyler Thomas: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Casey Ryan: 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Brian Glowicki: 1 IP, 1 BB
  • Austin Filiere: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Jhonny Bethencourt: 1 for 4, 2B

Rookie: AZL Cubs
Mariners 6, Cubs 5
Half the runs the Mariners scored were unearned.

  • Faustina Carrera: 4 IP, 3 R (0 ER), 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Rolle Lacy: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Chris Singleton: 2 for 5, SB
  • Yonathan Perlaza: 2 for 5
  • Ramsey Romano: 3 for 4, 2B
  • Cam Balego: 2 for 4, 2B

Other Notes

  • The grounds crew should get an assit on that bunt by Wilson. I don’t imagine there are very many diamonds so perfectly maintained that a ball bunted that hard on that path goes perfectly straight that long.
  • Dillon Maples pushed his consecutive outs by strikeout streak to fifteen, and that is where it ended.
  • After hitting .320/.371/.500 with ten home runs for South Bend, 23 year old left handed hitting shortstop Vimael Machin (2015 draft) has been promoted to Myrtle Beach. He promptly homered in his first at bat.
