Weekend Catch-Up: A Perfect Sweep, A Fruitful Trade, and a Handful of Rumors

THAT was a good weekend, my friends. Coming off of the All-Star break, you certainly hoped the Cubs would look refreshed, and more like themselves – or at least the version of themselves we believe they can be.

And, unlike the entirety of the first half, the Cubs actually did the thing that you were so desperately hoping they would do, sweeping the Orioles in convincing fashion.

Friday, July 14

Friday’s bombshell was that the Cubs are reportedly still pursuing Sonny Gray, even after acquiring Jose Quintana.

Jason Heyward had another disappointing first half, but there remains reason for optimism going forward.

Luis dug into the evolution of Mike Montgomery’s pitch mix, which had been quite successful for him, at least until recently.

With the addition of Jose Quintana, Dylan Floro went back to Iowa, and Eddie Butler moved into the bullpen.

The Cubs built a commanding lead against the Orioles right out of the gae homering four times in the process. And then the Cubs learned that 8-0 is not always “commanding.” But, hey, they held on to win!

In the 9th inning, Jason Heyward made a Houdini catch.

Gotta love watching a Cubs prospect with a bunt hit that scores a runner from second.

The Jose Quintana trade was not just a boost to the Cubs’ rotation – it could be a huge boost to their confidence. Which, fluffy as it may be, really does matter.

Ken Rosenthal got into the latest with the Cubs and Sonny Gray.

The Cubs built another huge lead against the Orioles, and this time, they didn’t let it become a game.

That included a homer from Albert Almora, who is absolutely raking against lefties.

Sunday, July 16

Luke got into the latest playoff race in the minor leagues, out in the Northwest League.

Among Sunday’s Bullets, Jake Arrieta and Hector Rondon have been especially hard to hit lately.

Aroldis Chapman has been struggling, and it might be because of how he was used last year.

The Nationals got in on the trade action, picking up their much needed relief arms in a trade with the A’s.

Jose Quintana was fantastic in his debut, and the Cubs’ bats continued their explosion, as they pulled off the sweep.
